School dispute spills into produce aisle

[Steve] Selvaggio, owner of Western Market on Nine Mile in Ferndale, is being targeted by a civil rights group that claims Ferndale Public Schools is unfair to Detroiters.

Is a fruit market being targeted because of a school issue a case of comparing apples to oranges?

No, says the civil rights group BAMN. The group (By Any Means Necessary) wants Ferndale Public Schools to allow Detroiters to attend Ferndale High School.

"We chose to picket outside of Western Market and Como's restaurant because they are high traffic areas," Stern said. "Businesses depend on Detroiters' dollars for their survival, yet they don't care if a Detroiter isn't allowed to sit next to their child in school."

[Monica] Mills, her husband Larry and Ferndale mayor Craig Covey co-founded the festival in 2002, back when Ferndale was a trifle less hip and Covey was but a mere councilman. It's grown into 10 days of concerts, clubs, coolness and charitable collections, built around performers who maybe aren't as mournful as they sound.

Protesters want charges dropped

About a dozen protesters from a civil rights group picketed the Ferndale courthouse Thursday before one of their members was arraigned on a charge of disorderly conduct.

"I was totally harassed by the police officer," Smith said of the charge. "I'm fighting the ticket because it was unjustly given to me."

Police arrested Smith after they said she refused to get out of the street where she was standing and repeatedly refused to identify herself.
