Gypsy moths have invaded Ferndale and Pleasant Ridge.
City Manager Bob Bruner's comments at last Monday's city council meeting may have passed people's notice, but the bands of burlap wrapped around trees up and down Oakridge and Woodland have not.
Bruner commented that both cities are consulting with representatives from MSU's Extension program to learn how to best deal with the problem. Citizens are invited to a meeting on July 17, at 7PM at the Kulick Center on Livernois.
Mike and Kristi Shuler noticed burlap wrapped around trees on Oakridge while walking Friday night, and picked up a flier posted on one of the trees alerting them to the gypsy moth problem. An inspection of an oak tree in their front yard found three dozen of the caterpillars.

Residents get another chance to weigh in on shelter move
Friday, 15 May 2009
Residents will again get a chance to weigh in next week on whether a homeless counseling and services group can move its office into a wing of the First Baptist Church.
The city Board of Zoning Appeals has already made a controversial ruling that the nonprofit South Oakland Shelter was allowed to move to the church as an "accessory use" of the church's mission under zoning laws.
However, the question remains whether the city will grant a special land use permit to clear the way for SOS to move to the church on Pinecrest near Nine Mile and set up its offices and other services.
